James Henry Worth (1916 – 1986)

Early Life

James Henry Worth was my grandfather. He was born on 19th June 1916, the son of Richard Henry Worth (1893โ€“1947) and his wife Annie Elsie Worth (nรฉe Harris). His entry in the Tavistock birth register indicates he was born prior to his parents moving to Plymouth. Unfortunately, I never met my grandfather as he passed away several years prior to my birth. (๐Ÿ”’England & Wales Births 1837-2006).

Career

James followed in his father’s footsteps by pursuing a career on the railways. In the 1939 Register, he is recorded living with his parents at 55 Glendower Road, Plymouth, with his occupation listed as a General Labourer for the Great Western Railway (๐Ÿ”’1939 Register, RG101/6774E/007/20, Plymouth C.B.).

Marriage & Later Life

On 24th April 1943, James married my grandmother, Bessie Irene Pook, at St. Augustine Church, Lipson, Plymouth (๐Ÿ”’Devon Marriages And Banns, Plymouth & West Devon Record Office).

St. Augustine Church, Lipson, Plymouth – circa 1915, has since been demolished in the early 2000s and replaced with student accommodation. The site is situated on the corner of Alexandra Road & Ashford Hill. (Photograph public domain from Wiki Commons)

James and Bessie had four children:

  • Irene Worth (1944โ€“1945) (Died in infancy)
  • Barbara Worth (b. 1945)
  • Richard Francis Worth (1948โ€“2019)
  • Pauline Anne Worth (b. 1961)

James died in August 1986. He was survived by his widow, Bessie, who passed away in September 2002 (England & Wales Deaths 1837-2007).
