Family History

Following in the footsteps of my mother and late great aunt I am curious about the history of the family and extending as completely as possible the male lineage of my mother’s side of the family (Worth family originating from Walkhampton, Devon). My mother and aunt managed to complete our family tree with direct ascendents to the 1650s without the help of modern conveniences such the internet we know today or large data processing vendors such as Ancestry.com. This process was completed with physical originals / microfilm records from local parish stored at West Devon Records Office (now relocated to The Box, Plymouth) along with inscriptions from grave memorials of the family and publications aggregating such records from The Devon Family History Society and Dartmoor Press. Quite an impressive and laborious feat.

Unfortunately due to the loss of records during the English Civil War (1642 – 1651) it has been impossible to go back further into history, leaving the family’s oldest known ancestor as Nicholas Worth. Due to this I am trying to extend the tree in other ways including adding additional detail to the persons already added, and widening the tree to include other descendent branches. I have also digitised the existing data using the opensource GRAMPS application and keep the database files version controlled using Github.

A redacted version excluding living descendants of the family tree may be downloaded here – Download Family Tree
