Family History

Following in the footsteps of my Mother and my Great Aunt I have a keen interest in family history. In particular the male lineage of my mother, the Worth family emanating from Walkhampton in Devon, UK. During the 1990s the aforementioned family members completed extensive research populating the family tree as far back as the English Civil War (1642 – 1651), quite an impressive feat as online genealogy data aggregators such as ancestry.co.uk did not exist back then, the data was entirely researched from public records primarily at the West Devon Record Office (now part of The Box, Plymouth), grave memorials within local Church yards and paper publications by the Devon Family History Society & Dartmoor Press.

Through this research they identified my oldest known ancestor Nicholas Worth (1655 – 1699) a tinner who worked at Keaglesborough Tin Mine and lived down the hill at Riddipit farmstead. Unfortunately due to the civil war a majority of the parishes’ earlier records were destroyed which has limited research beyond this point. Gaps also exist in records due to a fire involving the Diocese of Exeter archive during the Exeter Blitz in World War II. Since the passing of my Great Aunt I have become custodian of her research and have continued to contribute through the digitisation using the GRAMPS opensource genealogy research software and where possible extending the tree sideways and adding further detail. This page has been published to aid anybody else who is researching the Worth family of Walkhampton.
